We provide dedicated, long-term 1:1 volunteer male mentors for fatherless boys in the Reading area. Our mentoring is active, fun, and designed to build enduring friendship between a mentor and his mentee.

Chapter2 mentors

Chapter2 mentors are trusted male adults who are consistent and reliable. They provide mentees with guidance as well as opportunities for new experiences that build confidence and self-esteem. We believe this is what a boy needs to navigate towards healthy masculine adulthood.

What makes Chapter2 different from other mentoring organisations?

Mentoring is:


  • weekly

  • long-term (pairs meet for a minimum of two years)

  • activity-based

  • 1:1

  • free for the mentee and his family

  • outside of school hours

Who can be referred?

We accept referrals for boys aged 7-16 living in Reading and the surrounding area. We typically expect the greatest impact when we start mentoring boys aged 10-12.

Who Can Refer?

We accept referrals directly from:

  • Parents, guardians, or carers
  • Organisations or individuals with the consent of the guardian
  • Schools
  • Professionals that work with the young person

The Referral Process

To give every pairing the best possible foundation, we gather key details about the young person, including their hobbies, their individual needs and their preferences. This involves speaking directly with the family, as well as liaising with their school and any other professionals involved with the young person.

Will all referrals be provided with a mentor?

We cannot guarantee that every referral will be given a mentor as we do not operate on a first-come, first served basis. Instead, referrals are paired with the most suitable mentor based on availability, location, shared interests, and personality. As a result, finding the right mentor can take some time.

How will I know if you’ve found a mentor for my son?


  • Initial contact

    When we find a potential mentor for a referral, we contact the guardian.


  • Preparation

    A member of Chapter2 staff visits the young person and his guardian at their home. We give him an overview of Chapter2 mentoring, and the potential mentor.


  • Introduction

    If the young person and his guardian are happy to proceed, Chapter2 arranges and attends an official introduction between the mentor and the young person at the young person’s home.
